What are fullerenes?
Fullerene are a complex chemical compound which is made up of a single kind of element. It is a pure substance but with a very complicated structure. It is not falling under the category of a compound as such but the chemical bondings of the element are not that easy to understand. These are relatively new entities in the chemistry world and were discovered in mid-1980’s. Since its invention, the elements have gained a lot of attention by the researchers with regards to its applications as they have a lot of beneficial properties.
Fullerenes are considered as molecules that are pure substances which consist of a single type of atom of carbon which can form different shapes based on its properties and occurrence. It can be found in shapes like cubes, spheres, tubes etc. The main characteristic of the fullerenes is that it has a hollow structure or a sort of empty region inside its molecular structure. It is somewhat like a basketball which is spherical in shape and has a hollow core which is occupied by air, this makes it bouncy by character. The molecule of fullerene is made up of carbon alone and has a core hollow space inside it.
Structure of Fullerenes –
C60 fullerenes which are made up of carbon can take up any sort of shape that you can imagine. Structurally they resemble graphite which is a carbon compound found in the lead of a pencil. The structure of graphite is such that it contains sheets of carbon atoms which are connected in the form of hexagonal rings having 6 sides. If a fullerene is having complete spherical shape then it is also known as buckyballs or buckministerfullerenes as it resembles the shape of a soccer ball.
